THE FIRST WEEK OF PRACTICE WILL BE USED AS AN EVALUATION PERIOD. Coaches will determine the appropriate level for each player that'll ensure they receive guidance and instruction best suited to their skill level. Signing up for this team gives coaches a general idea on where your child currently stands. As mentioned, they will determine final placement after the first week, that considers your child's coachability, fundamental skills, and experience level. Placement is not final and can change as the season goes on, based on the player's progress as determined by the coaches, to continue to evolve your child's basketball skills. The beginner and intermediate level team is meant for 4-6 grade players who:
Beginner:
-has only attended clinics or camps, does not have experience playing on an organized basketball team
-struggles with dribbling with their head up, shoots with 2 hands, or does not consistently hit the rim when shooting the ball
-does not have a full understanding of the rules of basketball, lines on the court, etc.
Intermediate:
-has played on an organized team before
-knows how to properly dribble the ball and finish layups, but still struggles with advanced moves such as between the legs, or cannot hit the rim from the 3-point line
-knows the basic rules of basketball, but has not yet learned concepts such as help defense
Logistics:
The Winter season runs November 4 to February 20. There are two evening practices per week, Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm at the Latin School Gyms. The time and location are subject to change based on gym availability, but will be close to those times. These practices focus on skill development with heavy emphasis on ball handling, spacing fundamentals, shooting and shot creation plus scrimmages. The third practice per week is Saturdays 10-11am, also at the Latin School.
In addition to the three practice sessions per week, the team will compete in four (4) local shootouts this season. The tentative game dates are: Saturdays: Dec 5, Jan 23, Feb 13 & 20. The shootouts will include two games at a suburban location and provide an opportunity for competitive 5-on-5 play incorporating new skills and playing concepts.
There will be no practices during the Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday breaks.
The fee for the Winter Team is $1200 which includes:
- Mon/Wed/Sat practices @ Latin
- Sat Shootouts (4 dates, 8 games)
- CSBA Gear
You will also need to order a uniform from Squad Locker (under $100).
